The nine orphans' houses were built by an Australian charity some 25 years ago. The source of the funding explains some of the names,
and the age explains the delapidated condition in which some find themselves. Last year we did some work on Kookaburra, enlarging one of the two dormitories, repainting
parts of it
and repairing part of the verandah; we paid for a new roof on the house itself and its adjacent building, which acted as a kitchen, a store and a chicken shed. We
put in some channels to divert the rainwater from further washing away the foundations.
During our renovations the girls moved their bunk beds to the chicken shed. This year as well as more complete repainting and finishing the verandah repair we
levelled and concreted the floor in the kitchen and store, so that the store can be used as an additional dormitory, and repaired the floor of the chicken shed. We
bought tiles, and paid to have them laid, and bought and installed a tank for rain-water harvesting. We arranged to have the gutters fitted to take the rainwater to the tank,
though this task is not yet complete.
